Dual langFred Douglassuage is an enrichment program educational model in which students are taught literacy and content in two languages.

Dual language programs foster bilingualism, biliteracy, enhanced awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, and high levels of academic achievement through instruction in two languages.

At Fred Douglass, dual language enrichment has been in existence for over 25 years. It is highly successful and the students that participate achieve great academic success. The students are given the opportunity to face high, rigorous academic standards as well as become bilingual and biliterate. Currently, students that participate in the program often receive two years of high school credit before entering middle school. Moreover, the students then move into AP Spanish language and many receive college credit before entering high school.

Former students have gone on to have great success in secondary education. Many of our former students have tested out of college credit for Spanish courses and often major or minor in Spanish in college.

Research shows us that learning a language at a young age fosters the development of strong math and science skills. The brain actually forms differently and is more apt to global and spatial thinking. Language also is more easily deciphered at a young age with a better ability to speak fluently and accurately
